Does he like me? What his texts can (and can't) tell you
You've reread the same message twelve times. Was that “haha” warm or polite? No text can read his mind, but patterns over weeks are hard to fake. Here's what to look for.
Look at patterns, not single messages
One dry reply means nothing. He might have been at work, tired, or typing with one hand on the subway. What matters is what happens again and again.
So zoom out. Scroll back a few weeks and look at the conversation as a whole, not the last message that made your stomach drop.
Signals that usually mean interest
He starts conversations. Not every time, but regularly, without needing a reason.
He asks questions and follows up on things you told him. Remembering your exam or your sister's wedding takes attention.
His replies keep a similar rhythm to yours. Fast or slow doesn't matter much, but consistency does.
He makes plans, and they actually happen. “We should hang out” is nice. “Saturday at 7?” is better.
The conversation keeps going on its own. You're not the one reviving it every time it stalls.
Signals that deserve a closer look
You're almost always the one texting first. Count it over a month, honestly.
His replies are short and close the conversation instead of opening it. “Haha nice” and nothing after.
He's warm late at night and distant during the day. That's a pattern worth noticing.
Plans stay vague. “I'll let you know” keeps coming back, and you never hear back.
You send two or three messages in a row, often, before getting one reply.
None of these proves he's not interested. But if most of them describe your chat, it's a sign the effort isn't balanced, and that's worth knowing either way.
Things that mean less than you think
Emojis and punctuation. Some people never use them. A missing smiley isn't a message.
Being left on Read once. Life happens.
Reply speed alone. Some people answer in seconds to everyone. Others take hours with everyone. Compare him to his own habits, not to yours.
A single great or terrible day. Everyone has off weeks.
Get an outside read
The hardest part is staying neutral when it's your own chat. That's where numbers help. OttoKnows reads your exported conversation and counts what you'd never have the patience to: who texts first and how often, each person's typical reply time, who double-texts, the longest silences, and the week things shifted.
Then Otto writes his take, brutal, kind or funny, with quotes from your messages, a verdict and concrete tips. The preview with all the stats is free; the full report is a one-time payment shown before you pay.
Keep in mind: the stats are facts, the interpretation is an AI's read. It's insight, not mind reading, and only he can tell you how he feels.
The most reliable test
If you've watched the signals for a while and still can't tell, the clearest answer usually comes from asking, or from suggesting a specific plan and seeing what he does with it. His reaction will tell you more than any message you reread at 2 a.m.
And only analyze your own conversations. Reading his chats with other people, without his knowledge, isn't the move.
FAQ
Does a fast reply mean he likes me?+
Not on its own. Compare his reply times with how he usually texts, and look at whether he also starts conversations and makes plans.
He only texts me at night. What does that mean?+
It might just be his schedule. But if the warmth only shows up late and plans never happen, it's a pattern worth thinking about.
Can an app tell me if he likes me?+
No app can read feelings. What OttoKnows does is measure the behavior in your chat and give you an honest read of it, so you can decide for yourself.
